Benign Breast Conditions

You felt a lump in one of your breasts. Do not panic. It can be a completely benign condition, this type of pathology being fortunately much more common than cancer. But, it is safe to talk to your doctor about it. What are the diseases that can affect the breast?

Adenofibromas, lipomas, mastodynias, abscesses, cysts, tumors… Many ailments can affect the breast during a woman's life. Their discovery and diagnosis can be the subject of great anxiety. The most common, however, are benign tumors. “They have a slow growth and remain localized in the tissue or the organ on which they appeared ", one can read on the site of the National Cancer Institute.

The most common adenofibromas

Symptoms

The most common benign breast tumors are fibroadenomas or adenofibromas. “These are small balls of flesh that develop in the mammary glands ", defines Dr Nasrine Callet, gynecologist and oncologist at Institut Curie. These glandular formations are particularly observed in young women and are, in general, a size of 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter.

They are round, can be mobilized under the skin and firm to the palpation. On mammography and ultrasound, their contours are quite regular. The lump is often painless and there is no discharge from the breast

Diagnostic

The doctor can make the diagnosis through a clinical breast exam. Mammography, ultrasound or even biopsy can confirm this.

Treatment

An adenofibroma can be left in place. “If it is big, we can remove it”, explains the specialist. This will allow the doctor to request a puncture. Performed with a needle without local anesthesia, this gesture is certainly unpleasant but not too painful. The cells collected by this puncture will confirm the diagnosis of adenofibroma within a few days.

In the vast majority of cases, these tumors do not pose an increased risk of breast cancer. In young women, we are therefore content to monitor them unless they are growing too quickly. In older women, a more interventionist attitude (surgery) is more readily proposed. The operation, performed under general anesthesia, is easy and requires a break of only a few days of work.

The case of intracanal lipomas and papillomas

Other benign tumors can also be encountered such as:

Lipomas, small balls of fat located under the skin;

Intracanal papillomas, that is to say small tumor formations developed from the mouth at the level of the nipple of the milk ducts, the ducts which allow the evacuation of milk. These papillomas will be removed by the surgeon.

Treatment

Sometimes anti-inflammatory drugs or venotonics are offered to treat them. Sometimes, the doctor also prescribes hormonal therapy, including progestins or modifies an existing hormonal treatment (pill) in order to reduce them.

Breast abscesses

Symptoms

Breast infections or abscesses can occur after breastfeeding. The germs were able to get inside the gland through the crevices of the nipple. These conditions are manifested by a fever, enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit, a red and painful area of   the skin, and, in the case of an abscess, the appearance of a lump
